The Move of the Week is on a Tuesday. The Noe Valley Night Market takes 24th Street at Sanchez on Tuesday the 29th, 4:30 to 8:30 PM, and it made the cut ahead of anything on the weekend because it is the one night market inside this window we could confirm twice: SFMTA posted a travel advisory for it (24th closes between Sanchez and Vicksburg from 2 to 10 PM, and the 48 reroutes), and Funcheap's series page carries the same date and hours. It runs on the last Tuesday of each month, so the next one after this is late October. Two plays behind it, both in Hayes Valley and the Tenderloin: the free Good Neighbor Week kickoff at Civic Center Plaza on Saturday at noon, and the First Thursday Art Walk on October 1, which ends at a jazz club with a no-cover bar. Now the part you cannot check yourself. Last week we held a set of Palace of Fine Arts Theatre dates because they came from one aggregated source; two of them now clear two sources each, the venue's own pages included, so KevOnStage (Friday) and Amy Grant (Sunday) are on the radar this week. They are radar-only for a reason of our own making: the Palace anchored an August play, and our eight-week rule keeps it out of a play until October 1. The Castro Theatre comes off that same rule on the 28th, but we could not find a show there before October 4, so we are not printing one. A two-night music-and-poetry program at 544 Capp St on the 25th and 26th had exactly one source, so it is not here. The Park Market at Crane Cove may well be on Saturday; we still have not seen a page that says so, so it is not here either. One clarification to last week: we said Jardiniere on Grove Street was out of our rotation because its listing read closed. It is not a recent closing: the restaurant closed in April 2019. Nothing in SoMa or Dogpatch cleared the bar this week. SOMA Nights and Portola are this weekend, and we covered both last Thursday. Fleet Week's run opens October 4, but its programming — the ship tours, the concerts, the air show — starts October 5, after this edition's window, so it leads next Thursday.

Tuesday the 29th: the Noe Valley Night Market on 24th and Sanchez, then dinner two blocks west

  1. 5:15 PM Noe Valley Night Market, Noe Valley Town Square, 24th St at Sanchez — Tuesday Sept 29 only, 4:30 to 8:30 PM. It runs on the last Tuesday of the month, and the Noe Valley Merchants run it. Live music, local food, artists and retail vendors, per the SFMTA advisory. SFMTA closes 24th between Sanchez and Vicksburg from 2 to 10 PM and reroutes the 48, so do not plan on the 48 stopping at the corner. The J Church stops at Church and 24th, about a block and a half east of the square. We link the organizers' series page, not a page for this date, because that is the link that will still work on Wednesday. Arriving 45 minutes after it opens gives you about two hours on the block before dinner.
  2. About 6:55 PM The light goes over 24th Street — Here is our sunset math. Last week we printed 7:13 PM for Sept 17. San Francisco loses about a minute and a half of evening a day right now, so twelve days later puts Tuesday at about 6:55. That is our arithmetic, not a published table, and it is good to a few minutes. The last 20 minutes or so of daylight fall inside the market, and the rest of the market runs in the dark.
  3. 7:15 PM Dinner at Fiorella Noe, 4042 24th St — Two blocks west of the market, past Noe St toward Castro. That is a four-minute walk, and no bus is involved. Tuesday hours are 5 to 9 PM per its OpenTable listing as it appears in search results — confirm when you book, because a Tuesday is the day neighborhood restaurants go dark. A 7:15 booking leaves an hour and 45 minutes before it closes. Italian. Book it on OpenTable before Tuesday; we did not check whether it takes walk-ins that night. The market closes at 8:30 and Fiorella at 9, so the evening ends by itself.

Why it lands: A market on a weeknight is an easy kind of date to agree to. It has an address and an end time, and nobody has to judge an outfit. This one is a real Tuesday rather than a weekend one pushed to a weeknight: it happens once a month on one closed block, and this is September's. Walking around first means that by the time you are sitting across a table from each other, you already have something to talk about.

Weather backup: If Tuesday is gone, the next Noe Valley Night Market is the last Tuesday of October, which falls outside this edition. We will confirm it when it gets closer. For the same shape of evening this week, the First Thursday Art Walk play below is also free, walkable and on a weeknight, and it has a later last call. If you cannot get a 7:15 table, reverse the order: Fiorella's happy hour runs 5 to 6 on Tuesdays, then walk two blocks east and eat your way along the market until 8:30.

Saturday the 26th: the Hayes Valley market, then the Good Neighbor Week kickoff at City Hall

  1. 10:45 AM The Hayes Valley farmers' market, 400 block of Hayes St — Saturdays only, 10 AM to 2 PM, run by PCFMA. We listed it on its own last week; this week it is only the warm-up. Buy coffee and something small, not lunch, because there are food trucks at the next stop. An hour on the block is plenty, and the market does not close until 2, so you can walk back after the kickoff if you missed something.
  2. 11:50 AM Walk east on Hayes, across Van Ness, to Civic Center Plaza — It is about ten minutes on foot from the market to the plaza in front of City Hall. You cross Gough, Franklin and Van Ness and reach the plaza at Polk, and there is no bus to catch. If either of you is coming from farther away, Civic Center station (BART and Muni) is at UN Plaza, about two blocks east of the square.
  3. 12:00–2:00 PM SF Good Neighbor Week Kickoff Party, Civic Center Plaza — Saturday Sept 26 only, noon to 2 PM, free. On the program: an opening ceremony and a parade of neighborhoods, the Good Neighbor Award winners, neighborhood tables, live music, dancing, neighborhood art, food trucks and circus performers. Four sources carry the same date, hours and place: the organizers' own site plus the West Portal, Mission Bay and Glen Park neighborhood associations. The kickoff opens a nine-day citywide Good Neighbor Week running through Sunday Oct 4. We have not checked the rest of the week's program event by event, so we are not listing any of it. Two hours is the whole event, and a 2 PM finish leaves the afternoon open.

Why it lands: A daytime date with a fixed two-hour center is an easy invitation to say yes to, and the civic kind helps: there is a parade to watch and circus performers, so there is always something in front of you. The market beforehand works because it has no schedule. You meet when you meet, get coffee, and walk ten minutes to something that starts at noon.

Weather backup: If Saturday is gone, the same walk works with just the market on a later Saturday; it runs every week from 10 to 2. Good Neighbor Week itself runs through Oct 4, so check the organizers' site for the rest of the week, which we have not verified.

Thursday Oct 1: the First Thursday Art Walk, then a no-cover jazz bar on Eddy

  1. 6:00 PM SF First Thursday Art Walk, Tenderloin and Lower Polk — Thursday Oct 1, 6 to 10 PM, free, with 27-plus galleries open late. It is a monthly series on the first Thursday, and this is the first one that falls inside our window. The organizers' site has an interactive gallery map. We link that instead of a page for this date, and we are not naming specific galleries as stops, because we have not checked any single gallery's hours for this night. Pick three or four close together on the map before you meet, not on the sidewalk.
  2. 6:00–8:30 PM Walk the map, and keep it to about two and a half hours — The walk runs four hours, and you do not need all of them. Three or four galleries in about two and a half hours, all inside the same Tenderloin and Lower Polk grid, gives you something to talk about at every door. Leave by 8:30 and there is still a full evening at the next stop, which is open until 11.
  3. 8:30 PM Black Cat, 400 Eddy St — Thursday hours are 6 to 11 PM. The street-level bar opens at 6, Wednesday through Sunday, and has no cover. The ticketed jazz room typically runs $25 to $55 a head. Black Cat is in the Tenderloin, the same neighborhood the walk covers, so this is a walk and not a ride. We have not checked who is playing on Oct 1, so we are not naming anyone. If the lineup matters to you, check the club's calendar and buy the room; if it does not, the free bar upstairs is enough.

Why it lands: An art walk takes the pressure off a date. You are both looking at the same wall, you can agree or disagree about it, and walking to the next gallery gives you a natural pause. It also makes the later decision easy: after two and a half hours of galleries, a bar with no cover and a club with music underneath it is an obvious next step, and it costs nothing to try.

Weather backup: If Thursday the 1st is gone, the Art Walk is monthly, on the first Thursday, and the organizers' map is the page to check. Black Cat's no-cover bar is open Wednesday through Sunday from 6, so the second half of this play works any of those nights on its own.
