Irving Street closes between 20th and 25th Avenue a week from tomorrow for the Sunset Night Market's Mid-Autumn Moon Festival — Friday the 25th, 5 to 10 PM, free, 75-plus retail and art vendors and 35-plus food vendors. That is the Move of the Week, and it is there on purpose rather than by inheritance: we had it in the file from last week's pass without a live re-check, so we re-ran it this morning before building anything on it. Six listings carry the same date, hours and blocks, including the organizers' own two — Sunset Mercantile and the Sunset Chinese Cultural District — plus the event's Eventbrite, Funcheap, DoTheBay and Mato. It holds. Three things we cut or held, since the cuts are the part you cannot check yourself. The Heart of the Richmond Night Market that some listings said runs 'through September' does not have a September date: the 2026 season was exactly Jun 20, Jul 18 and Aug 15, per the Richmond merchants' own calendar and Funcheap's series page, and the organizers signed off until 2027. If you saw a Saturday-the-19th Richmond market somewhere, it is not real. Jardiniere on Grove Street is out of our rotation until we can prove otherwise — the business listing now reads closed, and we are not sending you to a dark door on a Friday. And we found a full September schedule for the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre that came from one aggregated source rather than two, so those dates are not in this edition at all; same reason the Symphony's opening gala is missing. Two plays: SOMA Nights on Thursday the 24th, which is the last one of 2026, and Portola at Pier 80 that weekend, which is the expensive one and labeled as such. Seven on the radar across four neighborhoods, and one of them is tonight.

Friday the 25th: the Sunset Night Market takes five blocks of Irving for the Moon Festival

  1. 4:15 PM Happy hour at Fifty Vara, 1735 Noriega St — Friday hours are 11:30 AM to 10 PM and the bar-area happy hour runs Monday to Friday, 3:30 to 5:30 — so a 4:15 arrival sits inside it with more than an hour to spare. Kitchen, bar and brewery in one room, house-brewed beer, opened spring 2025. It is five blocks south of Irving at roughly 24th Avenue, which is an eight-to-ten-minute walk to the middle of the market rather than a transit decision. Reserve or don't; the point of starting here is that you arrive at the market already talking, instead of meeting each other in a crowd.
  2. 5:30 PM Walk north to Irving and 24th — Sunset Night Market: The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival — Friday Sept 25 only, 5 to 10 PM, free, Irving St between 20th and 25th Ave. Seventy-five-plus retail and art vendors and thirty-five-plus food vendors across five closed blocks, with lanterns, mooncakes, cultural performances and live entertainment as the Mid-Autumn program. Here is the verification, because we would rather show it than assert it: this was a carried-forward lead in our files, so we re-checked it before printing and found six independent listings agreeing on date, hours and blocks — Sunset Mercantile and the Sunset Chinese Cultural District (both organizers), the event's own Eventbrite, Funcheap, DoTheBay and Mato. Arriving at 5:30 rather than 5:00 costs you half an hour of a five-hour market and buys you a queue that has already moved.
  3. 7:01 PM The light goes, and the lanterns start doing the work — Sunset math, shown rather than claimed. Two anchors: San Francisco set at 7:27 PM on Sept 8, and 7:13 PM tonight, Sept 17. The city loses about a minute and a half of evening a day this stretch, which puts Friday the 25th at 7:01. Outer Sunset caveat that the clock will not tell you: you are eight blocks from Ocean Beach and the fog can take the light early and the temperature with it. Bring the layer you would bring to a night game.
  4. 10:00 PM Hard close — and the transit answer, which you want before you need it — Ten is the stated end. Organizers say there is no onsite parking and street parking is extremely limited, and they are recommending transit outright — the N Judah runs one block south of the market on Judah, which is the reason this whole plan works without a car. The organizers are also handing out $25 Lyft codes to get people to and from the market; that is their line, not a price we can quote you, so treat it as a thing to look for at the market rather than a budget item. Straight from our desk: we did not verify any individual Irving Street bar's Friday closing time this week, so if you want one more stop, walk up to a door rather than committing to one we have not checked.

Why it lands: A night market solves the two hardest questions of an early date — where to eat and when it ends — and answers both before you arrive. This one adds a reason to go on that specific Friday: the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival is an annual one-off, not a monthly you can catch next time, and it is the rare free evening where the whole activity is walking slowly and pointing at things. Starting with a happy hour five blocks away means the first twenty minutes happen sitting down.

Weather backup: If Friday is gone, the Outer Sunset's own rooms are the fallback and they do not require an event: Two Pitchers Brewing with Maillards Smash Burgers at 3821 Noriega, and Ruby's at 48th and Judah for smashburger tacos and margaritas, which is the west end of the same N Judah line. Neither is new — Ruby's opened in late summer 2025, Maillards took the Two Pitchers counter in April 2026 — so check their hours before you go; we verified the addresses and the history, not this week's schedule.

Thursday the 24th: the last SOMA Nights of 2026, six blocks of Folsom

  1. 5:00 PM SOMA Nights opens on Folsom St between 6th and 12th — Thursday Sept 24 only, 5 to 9 PM, free. Three independent sources carry the same date and hours — the SF Leather District, which co-runs it, plus Funcheap and Mato. This is the final 2026 instance of a monthly series that ran April through September; it does not return until spring 2027. Pop-up vendors, DJs, art installations and more than twenty participating Folsom Corridor businesses opening their doors along the route.
  2. 5:00–9:00 PM Walk the corridor — 6th to 12th is six blocks, and the businesses are the other half of it — The closed stretch is six blocks, which is about twelve minutes end to end at a normal pace and roughly an hour and a half the way you will actually do it. The twenty-plus Folsom businesses taking part are the reason this is not just a vendor row: the block party spills into rooms that are open anyway, so there is somewhere to sit when you want to sit. Four hours is long enough that you do not have to see all of it, and a Thursday is short enough that you will not want to.
  3. 9:00 PM Nine is a hard stop — and the dinner we had lined up does not work — We built this play intending to send you to Casa Sofia at 701 2nd St afterward — Peruvian and pan-Latin, chef Carlos Altamirano, opened May 2026 — and then checked the hours, which is the part that killed it. Its OpenTable listing has Tuesday through Thursday service running 11 AM to 9 PM, so a Thursday kitchen closes the same minute the market does. That is a fifteen-minute trip to a locked door, so: eat on Folsom, where thirty-five food vendors' worth of the point already is. Casa Sofia works on a Friday or Saturday, when it runs to 10 — keep it for the Portola weekend below.

Why it lands: Season finales are the only dates that come with a built-in reason not to reschedule, and this one is a hard finale rather than a soft one: the series is monthly from April, this is September, and the next instance is in another year. A free four-hour window on a Thursday is also the lowest-stakes shape a date has — no ticket, no reservation, and a nine o'clock end that neither of you has to be the one to call.

Weather backup: If Thursday will not work, the same block party's logic transfers a day later to the Sunset Night Market on Friday the 25th — also free, also a closed street, and two hours longer. Different side of the city, same evening.

Saturday or Sunday: Portola at Pier 80, and the honest price of it

her kind of night ✓ A two-day electronic festival on a working pier south of Dogpatch, and dinner afterward that is actually open$250 for a single day, $380 for both, per the festival's own site. That is the splurge play of the month and we are not dressing it up.SoMa & Dogpatch

  1. Sat Sept 26 or Sun Sept 27 Pick the day before you buy — the two lineups are not interchangeable — Saturday and Sunday, Sept 26 and 27, at Pier 80 on the Central Waterfront just south of Dogpatch. Saturday is headlined by Robyn and Dog Blood; Sunday by Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Four Tet and Zara Larsson. The Despacio audio dome runs both days. Four independent sources agree on the dates and the lineup split — the official site, ABC7, JamBase and BrooklynVegan. One thing we will not give you: none of those four itemizes a gate time, so we are not printing one. Check portolamusicfestival.com the week of, and plan the afternoon around your own arrival rather than ours.
  2. Before you commit The number, plainly: $250 one day, $380 for two — Per the festival's official site, a single-day ticket is $250 and a two-day is $380. That is two hundred and fifty dollars a head before you have eaten anything, which makes this a third-or-fourth-date plan rather than a first one — a full outdoor day is a lot to ask of someone you have met twice. If the lineup is the draw for both of you, the two-day is the better arithmetic at $190 a day; if it is the draw for one of you, buy one day.
  3. After — Sat to 10 PM, Sun to 9 PM Dinner at Casa Sofia, 701 2nd St, up the T Third — Pier 80 sits at the south end of the Central Waterfront; 701 2nd St is in South Beach by Oracle Park, and the T Third runs that corridor with no transfer. Hours per its OpenTable listing: Friday and Saturday 11 AM to 10 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 9 PM — so a Saturday festival day has a real dinner behind it and a Sunday one has a tighter one. Peruvian and pan-Latin from chef Carlos Altamirano, open since May 2026. Book it before the weekend; a room two blocks from the ballpark on a Saturday night is not a walk-in plan.

Why it lands: It is the only thing in this window that is worth planning a whole weekend around, and the only thing in this window that costs real money — those two facts travel together and we would rather you weigh them than be sold on them. The case for it as a date is the format: a full day outdoors with a shared soundtrack removes the pressure to talk continuously, which is the thing that makes dinner-only dates exhausting.

Weather backup: If $250 is the wrong number this month, the two free closed streets in this edition — SOMA Nights on the 24th and the Sunset Night Market on the 25th — are the same city on the same weekend for the price of dinner.
