One piece of useful negative news, because knowing where not to go is worth something: the Castro has no show Friday and both its weekend nights are sold out, so the Roxie is the bookable room in the Mission.

Roughly eighty craft vendors via West Coast Craft and twenty-five-plus food and drink makers via Off the Grid — arriving at the open means you can actually see the stalls before the crowd sets in.
Early evening Eat your way across the Off the Grid vendors, then find the Lounge Stage between Piers 2 and 3 — There is live music and DJ sets at the waterfront "Secret Spot" Lounge Stage. Grazing across a night market is the most forgiving structure a date can have — no menu decision, no table, no check.
5:00–8:00 PM If you want something to do with your hands, the free all-ages art workshop runs alongside — SF Children's Art Center is running a free drop-in workshop themed to Beniamino Bufano's "Hand of Peace" sculpture. All-ages means exactly that — it is not only for kids, and it is a good excuse to stand next to someone making something.

Why it lands: It is free to enter, it is on the water, it runs five full hours so there is no wrong time to arrive, and if the conversation is going badly you can both look at eighty tables of other people's work instead. The market only comes around monthly, which is what makes it a date rather than a default.

Weather backup: If the market is packed past enjoying, the Marina Green and the Fort Mason piers are right there and cost nothing at all.

Why it lands: Shorts programmes give you six things to disagree about over a drink afterward, instead of one two-hour silence.

Weather backup: The Castro is dark Friday and sold out Saturday and Sunday, so it is not the fallback this weekend. Golden Gate Park on Sunday is.

Afternoon Stay in the park — You are already in Golden Gate Park with the whole afternoon ahead of you, which is the actual argument for a morning start.

Why it lands: It is free, it is genuinely unusual, and it is over by mid-afternoon — a low-stakes daytime date that gives you something to look at from the first minute, with the largest park in the city as the second act.

Weather backup: If a 10 AM Sunday is a stretch, the festival runs to roughly 4 PM.
