Two corrections from the launch edition, up top where they belong. Our Stern Grove item told you to enter a ticket lottery that had already closed in July — the real path is the day-before Community Box Offices, and the festival's finale is this coming weekend (radar, below). And our Move of the Week pointed at the Castro on a weekend the Castro had no show. The fix, applied to everything here: every plan names the day it actually runs, and where we couldn't verify something this week, we say so in the line itself. This week's headline is free and it's a Thursday: on Aug 13 the Mission's daytime market (3–7) hands off to the Valencia night market (5–10) three blocks north. Also in: a hill-wide garage sale Saturday, cat videos at the Roxie, and a one-hour performance at Fort Mason with forty chairs in the room.

7:00 PM Dinner on the closed blocks — The market is open until 10, so nothing tonight has a curtain. We could not verify this month's vendor list, so the honest instruction is: walk 17th to 20th once, then choose. If you'd rather have a table, book it for 8:30 and use the market as the pre-dinner hour

Why it lands: The schedule does the work: two events, three blocks apart, overlapping for two hours, both free to walk into. If it's going well you're there until 10. If it isn't, you leave at 6:30 out only what two market snacks cost — neither market charges admission, so there is nothing to walk away from.

Weather backup: We could not verify a forecast this week, so take this as standing SF counsel instead: the fog layer usually takes the Mission after sunset (about 8 PM in mid-August) and both markets are outdoors — bring the jacket you'd take to a night game. In genuinely bad weather this is a two-hour plan instead of a six-hour one; neither market charges you for leaving early.

Sat Aug 15 Quicksand + Bane at the Castro Theatre Two post-hardcore bands on one bill in a movie palace: doors 6:30 PM, show 7:30 PM, $57–184. Only worth booking if one of you already knows the records — it's loud and specific, and it's a long night to spend being a good sport. Newly open Fieldwork Brewing's new Mission Rock taproom Fieldwork opened this taproom in late July at 300 Toni Stone Crossing, Suite B — full food menu, indoor and outdoor seating, no cover, and a 2-to-3-minute walk from Oracle Park's China Basin gate. Why it lands: A garage sale is the rare date where browsing is the activity — you find out inside twenty minutes whether you two can be funny about a stranger's ceramic owl. And it's cheap to abandon: a flat morning costs you a morning, not a night and $180.

Weather backup: No forecast this week, so standing counsel only: Bernal holds sun on days the west side is fogged in, and the sale is outdoors either way. If it's actually wet, the tables thin out fast — swap to CatVideoFest's 1:35 PM show at the Roxie the same day (radar, below), about ten minutes north by car.

8:00 PM Ice. Car. Rage. — the closing performance of Jess Curtis's 'Please. Stay. Touch.' — Sun Aug 16, 8–9 PM, Fort Mason Center's Landmark Building D, 2 Marina Blvd. Forty chairs in the room plus standing tickets — that's the entire house, so buy before you go. Our Aug 5 pass never surfaced a price; check the listing. If it's gone, steps 1 and 2 are still a good evening
9:15 PM Dinner after, if you're hungry: Equal Parts, 478 Green St, North Beach — About 10 minutes by car from Fort Mason, in the old Spaghetti Factory building; it opened in December 2025. It's a Sunday and we did not verify Sunday hours — call before you point the car at it

Why it lands: The show is one hour with a hard stop at 9, which is the right length for something neither of you has done before. And the mile of waterfront in front of it means you've been talking for 25 minutes before anyone has to have an opinion about contemporary dance.

Weather backup: Everything before 8 PM is outdoors, and we couldn't verify a forecast — so, standing counsel: the Marina's wind comes up the minute the sun drops and Fort Mason sits on the water. Layers, and start the walk nearer 7 than 7:30 if you'd rather be inside early. The show itself is indoors, so bad weather shortens the plan instead of killing it.
