Two things before the plans. We missed last Thursday, the 27th — that was our end again, not a thin week, and it is the second miss in a month. And here is the deadline that shapes this edition: Little Island's free summer programming ends Sunday, Sept 6. Not winds down — ends. The Glade goes dark and the Amph's ticketed season closes the same night, and we checked that against the season announcement and the venue's own final-week listing before building the weekend around it. Everything else below is Labor Day weekend or the week and a half after it.

New Breed Brass Band headlines the Brass Festival, free on the Bryant Park lawn her thing ✓ Fri Sep 4 · Free Friday's Picnic Performances night is the Brass Festival, New Breed Brass Band headlining at 7 PM on the lawn behind the New York Public Library — free, no ticket, no reservation. Tonight, Thursday Sept 3, the same lawn has Grace Kelly and Ashni for the Asian American Arts Alliance night. Two dates remain after Friday: Sept 10's Dance Party All-Stars, and Sept 11, which is the American Symphony Orchestra's 25th-anniversary 9/11 tribute and closes the season — a commemoration rather than a date night, and we would rather tell you that now than have you find out at the gate. Make it a date: bring a picnic, be on the grass by 6:15 for space, and let the brass band be the middle of the evening rather than all of it.via Bryant Park
Robyn, "The Sexistential Tour," at Barclays Center her thing ✓ Fri Sep 4 · Ticketed Robyn plays Barclays Center at 8 PM on Friday, 620 Atlantic Avenue, with the Atlantic Av–Barclays Ctr station directly underneath and the LIRR in the same building — nobody has to drive. We corroborated the date across the venue's own listing, Ticketmaster and AXS before printing it. Prospect Heights' Vanderbilt Avenue bar strip is a five-to-ten-minute walk if you want a drink first; we did not pin a specific room this week, so pick your own. Make it a date: buy two seats together rather than one good one and one obstructed — people dance at Robyn shows, and you want to be standing next to each other when it happens.via Barclays Center

The 46th Richmond County Fair, Labor Day weekend at Historic Richmond Town her thing ✓ Sat–Mon Sep 5–7 · Ticketed Three days of carnival rides, more than a hundred vendors and living-history demonstrations, on the grounds of Historic Richmond Town at 441 Clarke Avenue, among buildings that go back to the 1690s. The dates are solid — three sources — but we could not confirm hours or admission from two sources tonight, so check the museum's own site before you commit the afternoon. Make it a date: costumed interpreters and a colonial village make for a genuinely strange afternoon in the best sense, and it reads completely differently from another rooftop.via Historic Richmond Town

Texon Red plays George Jones, free in-store at Catalyst Records her thing ✓ Fri Sep 11 · Free An hour of George Jones covers, 5 to 6 PM, inside Catalyst Records — a record shop that lives inside Essex Market at 88 Essex Street. Free, no cover, no ticket, and the rest of the market's stalls are a few steps away. Make it a date: an hour of live country at five is the cheapest opener in this edition; eat at one of the market's counters afterwards and the whole first half of a Lower East Side Friday has cost you dinner and nothing else.via Essex Market

Gracie Square Art Show along the park fence, East End Avenue her thing ✓ Sat–Sun Sep 12–13 · Free The annual juried outdoor art show hangs on East End Avenue between 84th and 88th Streets, 10 AM to 5 PM both days, free to walk through, with roughly a hundred artists. It is the same stretch of park as Friday's telescopes, one week later. Make it a date: a Saturday-morning walk-through that ends on the river promenade, and looking at art together gives you something to disagree about in the first twenty minutes.via Carl Schurz Park Conservancy
Pig Island NYC, whole-hog barbecue at Snug Harbor her thing ✓ Sat Sep 12 · Ticketed, 21+ The seventeenth year of a one-day barbecue festival on the South Meadow at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace — more than twenty chefs, 11 AM to 4 PM, 21 and over, VIP entry at 11 and general admission at noon. We confirmed the date on both the organizer's site and Snug Harbor's own event page. Make it a date: the Staten Island Ferry is free in both directions, so the crossing is part of the day rather than a cost — just leave real time for the two miles between the St. George terminal and Snug Harbor.via Pig Island NYC

Ferragosto closes Arthur Avenue to cars her thing ✓ Sun Sep 13 · Free Arthur Avenue at East 187th Street shuts to traffic from noon to 6 PM for the Belmont BID's one-day Italian street festival — free, rain or shine, with a named 2026 bill that includes Nick Vero, Jessa V Salerno, RockSteady and Bob Bisaccia. We ran an Arthur Avenue itinerary on Aug 3 and this is deliberately not that: it is a single dated street closure, one afternoon only, and the block's shops sell out onto the pavement for it. Make it a date: go hungry and eat standing up — a festival where you split everything is a better second date than a table where you each order your own.via Belmont BID / Bronx Little Italy
Montague Street goes car-free for seven Sundays her thing ✓ Sun Sep 13 · Free Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights closes to cars from noon to 4 PM on Sunday Sept 13 — the first of seven straight Sundays running through Oct 25, each with its own programming. Be warned before you plan around it: this opening one is the Brooklyn Heights Back to School Party and the programming is pitched at children. Make it a date: skip the party and use the street — a commercial block with no cars on it is a good place to eat outside, and the Promenade is a five-minute walk west when you are done.via Montague BID

Saturday Sept 5, 5:00 PM Bon Appétit Live in The Glade, free, with the Mr. Jong pop-up cooking — Free, no ticket, in The Glade on Pier 55 at West 13th Street. Bon Appétit's Live Issues run is three nights only — Sept 4, 5 and 6 — with a different food pop-up each night: Bé Bếp on Friday, Mr. Jong on Saturday. Saturday is the one we would take, because it leaves Sunday as your rain date and Sunday is the last night there is.
6:00–8:15 PM Eat, on the pier or a few minutes off it — The Glade and the Amph are on the same pier, so the two-and-a-quarter-hour gap is yours and you never have to leave and re-enter. If you want a table instead, the ramps put you in the West Village or Meatpacking inside five minutes on foot. We are not naming a restaurant because we did not verify one this week, and we would rather say that than send you somewhere on a guess.
8:30 PM Thomas Bartlett's "Allen Ginsberg at 100" in the Amph, with Laurie Anderson — $25 a ticket, 8:30 PM, the Amph. Bartlett built it for the poet's centennial and the run is Sept 2 through Sept 6 with a rotating guest each night — Bill Frisell plays tonight, Thursday the 3rd. Two things worth knowing before you buy: the Amph is ticketed and The Glade is not, and Sunday Sept 6 closes Little Island's 2026 season, ticketed and free alike.

Weather backup: If Saturday washes out, Sunday Sept 6 has exactly the same shape — free in The Glade at 5, Ginsberg at 100 in the Amph at 8:30 — and it is the final night of both. There is no Monday version of this.

Friday on the Upper East Side: wine on First Avenue, then free telescopes on the East River

Friday Sept 4, 6:30 PM Dinner and South African wine at Kaia Wine Bar, 1446 First Avenue at East 75th — 1446 First Ave at E 75th, open Fridays 4–11 PM. We confirmed those hours when we ran this room on Aug 6 and have not re-checked them since, so call ahead if you are cutting the evening fine. Give it ninety minutes — you have twelve blocks to walk afterwards and the second half of the night is outdoors.
8:00 PM Walk north to Carl Schurz Park — Twelve blocks north and two avenues east, about twenty minutes at a normal pace. Enter at East 87th Street rather than 86th: the 86th Street entrance puts you on stairs and 87th does not, which is the kind of detail that matters when one of you is in the wrong shoes.
After sunset Free stargazing with the Amateur Astronomers Association on the John Finley Walk esplanade — Free, telescopes provided, no registration named in the listing, on the esplanade above the East River. It is weather-dependent — if cloud moves in, AAA's listing carries a rain date the following night, Saturday — and the AAA runs this park one Friday a month from May through October, so the next one after this is in October. We are not printing a start time: the listing says "after sunset," and we could not pin the exact minute to a source we trust tonight. In the first week of September that means somewhere after 7.

Weather backup: If cloud moves in, the session slides to its published rain date on Saturday rather than vanishing — check AAA's page before writing the night off. The other free outdoor option the same night is the Brass Festival on the Bryant Park lawn at 7 PM, in the radar below. If you would rather stay uptown, the same ten blocks of East End Avenue host the Gracie Square Art Show — but that is next weekend, Sept 12–13, not this one.

Saturday Sept 5, about 6:00 PM Get to the Oval at Hunter's Point South Park early and claim ground — The Oval, Hunter's Point South Park, on the water off Center Boulevard in Long Island City. Free, no ticket, no reservation, nothing to book. Arriving around 6 buys you an hour of river light before anything starts, and at a free screening the flat ground goes first.
At sunset How to Train Your Dragon (2025) on a thirty-foot inflatable screen — The twelfth season of the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy's Movies in the Park, projected by Rooftop Films' crew. No clock time is published — it starts at sunset, and in the first week of September that is after 7. One trap we walked into and then back out of: a separate NYC Parks listing ran this same film on Aug 5, which has passed. Sept 5 is the Conservancy's own date, and we checked both listings against each other before printing it.

Weather backup: The Conservancy publishes no rain date, so treat Saturday as a single shot rather than a window. If it goes, move to the Sunday version of the Move of the Week — Little Island, 5 PM free, 8:30 ticketed, and the last night of that season.

Saturday in Bushwick: doors at five on the Elsewhere roof, deep house while the light goes

An open-air Labor Day Saturday that starts early enough to still be a conversation

Saturday Sept 5, doors 5:00 PM Sparrow (CH), CISUMMI and TURÉ on the Elsewhere rooftop, 599 Johnson Avenue — Doors 5 PM, 21 and over, 599 Johnson Ave — a few minutes on foot from the Jefferson St or Morgan Ave stops on the L. Three names on the bill, deep house and afro house. Buy ahead: we did not find a door price confirmed by two sources, so treat the advance ticket as the plan. Full disclosure — we put you on this same roof on Aug 20 for a different party with a different bill; it is back because it is Labor Day Saturday and this is a five-o'clock start, which is a genuinely different night.
7:00 PM onward Stay up there through the change in the light — The roof sits above a low-rise stretch of Bushwick with open sky on most sides, and sunset lands after 7 in early September, so the hour either side of seven is the one to be up there for. No end time was published for the rooftop portion — do not build a 10 PM reservation somewhere else around it. Elsewhere runs indoor rooms in the same building, but we did not verify what is on them Sept 5, so check the venue's own calendar rather than assuming the night continues downstairs.

Weather backup: If the forecast is wrong, this one is fully outdoors and there is no indoor equivalent on the same ticket. The other Saturday you can commit to now is Pig Island at Snug Harbor the following weekend, Sept 12 — different borough, different date, but it is the one you can commit to now.
