Edition two. Two corrections first, because you'd rather get them from us than find out on a lawn: last week we printed Domino Park movie nights for Aug 12 and 26 — that series runs Tuesdays, so the real dates are Aug 18, Sep 1 and Sep 15 — and our Move of the Week was built on Brooklyn Bridge Park's free kayaking without saying it only runs Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday daytimes. Both fixed. This week the city does most of the work: a free harbor-lawn premiere Saturday, a limited run that ends Sunday on a pier, armored combat in a beer garden, and ten more on the radar — eight of which cost nothing to get into. Two housekeeping notes. The heat advisory runs Thursday and Friday with a heat index near 103, so every Friday plan below is built around shade and air conditioning; we could not verify a weekend forecast before filing and won't invent one. And where an organizer hasn't published a curtain time, we say so instead of guessing — you'll see "check the page" more than usual this week, which is the honest version of a schedule.

  1. Late afternoon Eat early on Stone Street, about 10 minutes' walk from the lawn — The cobblestone block in the Financial District is wall-to-wall outdoor tables. We're sending you to the street rather than to one specific room, because we didn't re-verify a single restaurant there this week and would rather say so — the block is a fixed landmark, the menus aren't our claim to make. Eat before the music, not after: this is the last stop with a predictable line for anything.
  2. Showtime esperanza spalding debuts an all-new work at Wagner Park, Battery Park City — free, Sat Aug 8 — It's in the Battery Park City Authority's own summer lineup as a free outdoor premiere of new work. The one thing the announcement does not publish is a curtain time — so check the BPCA page Saturday morning and plan to be on the grass a solid half hour before whatever it says. Bring something to sit on; it is a lawn, not a theater.
  3. After Walk the Battery Park City waterfront back toward Stone Street — The harbor path runs north from Wagner Park and puts you back at the cobblestones in roughly the same 10 minutes it took to get down. Sunset lands near 8 in early August, so depending on when the curtain actually is, you may get it on the walk rather than in a seat.

Why it lands: A major artist premiering an all-new work, outdoors, on a harbor lawn, for nothing — and it happens once. There is no second night.

Weather backup: August lawn, heat advisory running through Friday, and no verified Saturday forecast on our desk when we filed — so treat the BPCA page as the source of truth Saturday morning, because free outdoor programs are the first thing weather moves. If it's called off: Stone Street's dining rooms are indoors and 10 minutes away, and the Battery Dance Festival opens on the very same lawn Monday and runs free every night through Aug 16.

Free Friday at the Whitney, then Little Island's closing weekend

  1. 5:00 PM (Fri) Whitney Museum, free Friday night — Free every Friday 5–10 PM, but it's a reservation rather than a walk-in — book the slot before you leave work. It is also air-conditioned, which on Aug 7 counts as programming: the city is under a heat advisory with a heat index near 103.
  2. Then Walk up the Hudson to Little Island, Pier 55 — Both sit on the same stretch of waterfront a few blocks apart — under 10 minutes on foot, and slower than that at an August pace. Set the curtain time before you set the museum time; the show, not the museum, is the fixed point.
  3. Curtain — check the show page Anthony Roth Costanzo, "Minimalism," at the Little Island Amph — final weekend, Fri Aug 7 through Sun Aug 9 — Three nights and then it's gone for the season. Curtain times and remaining tickets live on littleisland.org — we are not printing a time we couldn't confirm. The Amph is open-air, so if Friday's heat reads as punishing, the same show plays Saturday and Sunday.
  4. After Smalls Jazz Club, West Village — Basement jam session, cover at the door, about the price of two cocktails — roughly a 15-minute walk east from the pier. The room's schedule changes nightly, so pull up the calendar and pick your set before you start walking.

Why it lands: A limited run on a pier with a free museum in front of it, and the run ends Sunday — this is the last weekend the plan exists.

Weather backup: Friday is the heat-advisory day (index near 103): the Whitney is indoors, the Amph is not. If Friday looks brutal, take the identical show Saturday or Sunday — that is what a three-night run is for. We had no verified weekend forecast when we filed, so check it yourself before you buy for Saturday.

Armored combat at a beer garden that opened in 1910

  1. 2:30 PM (Sat) Get to Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria ahead of the 3 PM start — The venue's own event page gives Sat Aug 8, 3 to 6, and lists no ticket link — so treat it as show-up-early rather than reserved. Half an hour of cushion is the difference between a table you want and a table you tolerate.
  2. 3:00–6:00 PM Bohemian Battles V — medieval armored steel combat — Three hours of people in steel armor going at each other, in a beer garden, on a Saturday afternoon. That is the venue's own listing, times included; we read it twice too.
  3. 6:00 PM onward Stay put — it goes back to being a beer garden the moment the bouts end — The place opened in 1910 and bills itself as the oldest beer garden in the city, so it does not need a plan from us: outdoor tables, Astoria, and an evening that starts at 6 instead of ending then. If you want a second act, you have the whole night and you've spent almost nothing.

Why it lands: Neither of you has to manufacture conversation while two people in plate armor swing at each other, and the venue has been running long afternoons since 1910.

Weather backup: It runs 3 to 6 — the hottest stretch of a Saturday — and we couldn't verify a Saturday forecast before filing (Thursday and Friday are under the advisory, index near 103). If the yard is unbearable, the hall the garden is named for is indoors; the schedule and any weather call will be on bohemianhall.com.

Live music inside the Met, then South African wine on First Ave

  1. 5:00 PM (Fri or Sat) Date Night at The Met — live music in the museum, 5 to 9 — MetLiveArts runs it Friday and Saturday evenings with ETHEL & Friends on the bill; it's included with admission, and admission is pay-what-you-wish if you live in NY, NJ or CT (worth having an ID on you). Two evenings a week means you can pick the night the weather picks for you.
  2. Around 8:00 PM Walk east across the Upper East Side to Kaia Wine Bar, 1446 First Ave at E 75th — Call it 20 minutes on foot, east and south. On Friday, with a heat index near 103 that does not fully let go at eight o'clock, a crosstown bus is the version of this step we'd actually take.
  3. 8:00 PM to close Dinner at Kaia Wine Bar — South African wine, fire-cooked food — Reopened this year in a bigger room built around live fire, and running Fri 4–11 PM, Sat 11 AM–11 PM — so a late sit-down works either night. Three local outlets confirmed the reopening and those hours; we did not find a booking page we could vouch for, so plan to walk in and go early if you want the bar.

Why it lands: Live music inside an air-conditioned museum, then a wine bar that spent the year rebuilding around an open fire — the only outdoor part of the night is the walk between them.

Weather backup: This is the heat plan. If you'd rather not walk 20 blocks' worth of avenue on Friday at all, take Saturday instead: Date Night runs both nights and Kaia opens at 11 AM on Saturdays, so an early dinner is on the table too.
