Saturday, Sept 26, 12:00 PM–10:00 PM — Saturday is the long day Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Midway Plaisance and venues across Hyde Park — Ten hours on Saturday, free at every stage, with a suggested donation of $10 per person. The 2026 bill includes the HPJF 20th Anniversary Band, the Alfredo Rodríguez Quintet, the Amir ElSaffar New Quartet, the Ari Brown Quintet, Ben LaMar Gay and Big Chief Donald Harrison. Set times are on the program page linked above and we are deliberately not reprinting them: the 2026 grid is the part that moves, and a wrong set time is the fastest way to waste an evening we sent you on.

Any point in the ten hours — stage to stage, on foot inside Hyde Park The walk between venues, on and around the Midway Plaisance — The structure is the unusual part and the reason it works as a date: the festival is spread across multiple Hyde Park venues including the Midway Plaisance rather than penned into one field, so moving between sets is a walk through a neighborhood instead of a lap of a fence line. Two things we checked so you do not have to. One, Sunday is the short day — 1 PM to 7 PM, six hours, not ten. Two, the Chinese American Museum's Mid-Autumn Festival runs the same Saturday from 4:30 to 7:30 PM and somebody will tell you to do both; it is at the Set in Stone Gathering Space in the Burnham Wildlife Corridor, about two miles north of the Midway, which is a drive or a bus with a transfer rather than an intermission. Pick one.

Why it lands: Free, ten hours, no ticket and no reservation means the only decision left is when to show up, which is the lowest-friction plan on this week's list. The suggested $10 a person is a donation and not a turnstile, so the budget is whatever you two decide to eat between sets.

Weather backup: Sunday the 27th runs 1 PM to 7 PM — same festival, six hours instead of ten. If you want the south side without the jazz, the Chinese American Museum's Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration is free with an encouraged RSVP, Saturday 4:30 to 7:30 PM at the Set in Stone Gathering Space in the Burnham Wildlife Corridor: mooncakes, a lantern procession and moon viewing in its tenth year.
