Chicago — week of Thursday, October 1, 2026
Friday night is already planned. Last week's Move of the Week was Friday, October 2: the West Town Art Walk tour at 5, First Fridays from 6 to 8, and the Lincoln Lodge at 8. It still stands, and printing it twice would be filler. So this week's Move is Saturday, October 3, and it is two festivals about a mile apart on the North Side. Lincoln Square's 39th Apple Fest fills Lincoln Avenue from 9 to 6. Block Club Chicago's free block party runs noon to 9 at Half Acre's Balmoral brewery. Do the apples in daylight, walk north, and stay for the DJ and the 8 PM karaoke.
The plays look ahead to the following weekend. The new Chicago Art Fair opens at the Merchandise Mart on October 7. On Saturday the 10th we pair it with the Riverwalk's Fall Fest, about three-quarters of a mile east along the river. Friday the 9th is for the Lincoln Park Wine Fest. We put it on Friday on purpose: Sunday the 11th is the Chicago Marathon, and the North Side course means closures and crowds that day. The radar adds a new Logan Square bistro and the monthly Pilsen gallery night.
Two places where we checked the work. Hooligan, Christian Hunter's new Logan Square bistro, opened today. One search summary gives its hours as Thursday to Monday, 5 to 10. We could not match that to the restaurant's own channels, so we have not printed hours. Our sunset times are calculated, not looked up: the NOAA solar formula applied to Chicago gives about 6:30 PM on Saturday the 3rd, 6:21 PM on Friday the 9th and 6:19 PM on Saturday the 10th. Treat each as accurate to a couple of minutes.
What we cut, and why. One listing still shows a St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest on October 10, but that festival ran September 25 to 27, and we covered it then. Berenjak opens in Fulton Market tomorrow, and it was in last week's radar. Adler Planetarium's free Wednesday nights for Illinois residents came to us as two snippets we could not check against the museum's own site, so they wait a week. The Riverwalk Fall Fest's $5 early-bird price is printed as an early-bird price, because nobody has told us what the gate costs.

Saturday Oct 3: Apple Fest on Lincoln Avenue, then Block Club's free party at Half Acre
her kind of night ✓
The 39th Lincoln Square Apple Fest in daylight, then about 1.1 miles north to Block Club Chicago's free block party at Half Acre's Balmoral brewery for the DJ set and 8 PM karaokeApple Fest asks a $5 suggested donation per person. The block party is free with an RSVP; VIP tickets exist, but we did not see a price. Cider, beer and food are the real costs.North Side

Saturday, Oct 3, 1:00 PM: the festival runs 9 AM to 6 PM Saturday and Sunday
Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest (39th annual), N Lincoln Ave between W Lawrence and W Sunnyside — The Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce closes three blocks of Lincoln Avenue for fresh-picked apples and cider from Midwest farms, apple dishes from local restaurants, hard and non-alcoholic ciders, seasonal beers, a makers' market and live music. Saturday runs 9 AM to 6 PM, and admission is a $5 suggested donation. The chamber's own page, do312 and Chicago on the Cheap agree on the dates and hours. Coverage calls Saturday the busiest day, which is why we start at 1 PM and leave around 3:15, not later.
-
Saturday, around 3:15 PM: about 1.1 miles north and a little east
The hop to Half Acre Beer Co., 2050 W Balmoral Ave — By our map math, the north end of the festival at Lawrence and Lincoln is six blocks south and about three blocks west of Half Acre. That is roughly 1.1 miles, a 25-minute walk or a five-minute ride. Walking it gets you out of the Apple Fest crowd and lands you at the party by about 3:45, just before the DJ handover at 4.
-
Saturday, Oct 3, 4:00–9:00 PM: one day only; the party runs noon to 9
Block Club Chicago's Block Party (third annual), Half Acre Beer Co., 2050 W Balmoral Ave — Block Club Chicago, the nonprofit neighborhood newsroom, runs this with Half Acre. It is free with an RSVP on the party's own site. Block Club's published schedule has DJ Cam Be from 4 to 8 PM and karaoke from 8 to 9. We arrive at 3:45 for the 4 PM DJ start; the kids' zone clears out at 5. Sunset is about 6:30 by our calculation, so you get two and a half hours of daylight before the karaoke. Block Club, Choose Chicago and the party's own site all carry the date and the noon-to-9 hours.
Why it lands: Both halves are free or close to it, so the only money you spend is on what the two of you actually want to eat and drink. The walk between them is the one quiet half hour of the day, which is where most of the talking happens. The 8 PM karaoke gives you a clear last stop. You can sing, or you can watch other people sing, and either one ends the night by 9.
Weather backup: Apple Fest also runs Sunday, October 4, from 9 to 6, and Friday the 2nd from 3 to 7. The block party is Saturday only. If Saturday does not work, Sunday at Apple Fest plus an early dinner is the smaller version of the same plan.

Pilsen's Chicago Arts District opens its galleries for Second Friday
Galleries, studios and shops along S Halsted around 18th Street open their doors in the evening. Artists are often on hand. This is the monthly series. We have not seen a lineup specific to October, and the two sources disagree on the information center's address, so we have not printed one. Make it a date: four hours of free galleries let you set the pace, and Simone's Bar is two blocks west at 960 W 18th St if you want to sit down afterward. Check its hours first.via Chicago Gallery News / Choose Chicago

Saturday, Oct 10, 2:30 PM: Saturday is the short day, 11 AM to 6 PM
Chicago Art Fair, the Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza — This is a new international contemporary art fair from Redwood Art Group, in its first year at the Mart. It opens with a preview on Wednesday, October 7, from 5 to 8 PM. Public days are Thursday and Friday, October 8 and 9, 11 AM to 8 PM, and Saturday the 10th, 11 AM to 6 PM. Tickets start at $27. The fair's own visit page, Time Out and Chicago Gallery News all carry the same schedule. We have not seen an exhibitor count, so we are not printing one. Two and a half hours is enough for a first pass, and it gets you out by 5.
-
Saturday, around 5:00 PM: three-quarters of a mile east on the river
The walk along the Chicago Riverwalk, south bank — Cross the river from the Mart to the Riverwalk on the south bank and head east. By our map math it is about three-quarters of a mile from Wells Street to the Riverwalk's east end near Lake Shore Drive, roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Walking it at 5 PM gets you to the Fall Fest well before sunset, which is about 6:19 by our calculation.
-
Saturday, Oct 10, 5:20–8:00 PM: Saturdays only, noon to 8
Riverwalk Fall Fest at Island Party Hut, Chicago Riverwalk between Columbus Dr and Lake Shore Dr — Island Party Hut runs this on Saturdays only, from noon to 8 PM through the end of October: hayrides on the river, a pumpkin patch, live music and fall beer and cocktails. Chicago on the Cheap, WGN and the Eventbrite listing all give the Saturday-only schedule. Early-bird tickets are listed from $5. We did not see a gate price, so buy ahead if the price matters to you. Arriving at 5:20 gives you an hour of daylight on the river before the 6:19 sunset.
Why it lands: An art fair gives two people something to react to, and it costs less than a dinner. The river walk afterward is a natural point to decide whether the evening continues. The Fall Fest closes at 8, so the night has a built-in end if you want one. Both venues sit on the river, so the whole plan stays within a mile.
Weather backup: The Art Fair is open until 8 PM on Thursday and Friday, October 8 and 9, if you would rather have a weeknight with smaller crowds. The Riverwalk Fall Fest also runs this Saturday, October 3, from noon to 8, though this week's Move is on the North Side.
Friday Oct 9: the Lincoln Park Wine Fest, two days before the marathon
her kind of night ✓
The Lincoln Park Wine Fest's 10th year, in a small neighborhood park at Wrightwood and Sheffield, booked as a two-hour Friday evening sessionGeneral admission starts at $30 per person and includes 12 standard tastings and a glass. VIP starts at $67.50. Two GA tickets come to about $60 before food.North Side
-
Friday, Oct 9, around 5:45 PM: two blocks from the Fullerton L
Fullerton station (Red, Brown and Purple lines) to Jonquil Park — Jonquil Park is at 1001 W Wrightwood Ave. By our map math that is about two blocks north of the Fullerton stop and a few doors west, roughly a five-minute walk. Friday hours are 5 to 10 PM. Sessions are two hours, so pick your time when you buy the tickets.
-
Friday, Oct 9, a two-hour ticketed session between 5 and 10 PM
Lincoln Park Wine Fest, Jonquil Park, 1001 W Wrightwood Ave — This is the festival's 10th year. General admission starts at $30 and is capped at 600 people per session. It includes 12 standard tastings from more than 50 varietals and a commemorative glass. VIP, from $67.50, adds five specialty tastings, private seating and a separate entrance. There are food pavilions on site, and proceeds go to the Wrightwood Neighbors Association, which looks after the park. The event is 21 and over. Jonquil Park, Wrightwood Neighbors and the Eventeny listing all carry the same three days and hours. Sunset is about 6:21 by our calculation, so an early session gets you the last of the daylight.
Why it lands: A tasting with a fixed number of pours takes care of both pacing and the question of when to leave. The 600-person cap per session keeps the park from feeling packed. We chose Friday because Sunday is marathon day: the course runs through the North Side on the 11th, and street closures and crowds make the festival's Sunday session the hardest one to get to.
Weather backup: Saturday, October 10, runs 11 AM to 10 PM, and an afternoon session pairs with the Chicago Art Fair's Saturday hours downtown if you start early. Sunday the 11th, 11 AM to 7 PM, is open too, but check the marathon's street closures before you go.
