This weekend is already spoken for. Last Thursday's edition sent you to Clark Street Live, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and Meet Me on Milwaukee, all on the 26th and 27th, and repeating them here would be filler. So the Move of the Week jumps ahead to Friday, October 2, the first night of the 16th West Town Art Walk. That night lines up three things. A free guided tour leaves St. Stanislaus Kostka Church at 5. The October First Fridays gallery walk runs 6 to 8 in Wicker Park and Bucktown. The Lincoln Lodge's Friday comedy showcase starts at 8, less than a mile up Milwaukee. You get two art walks and a show, and the only fixed price is the comedy ticket. For this weekend we added what is new. Friday the 25th, St. Alphonsus runs its 23rd Oktoberfest on Wellington from 5 to 10. Yes, that is a second Oktoberfest in two weeks. It is a different festival in a different neighborhood, and it gets a play because Friday night is where it works best. Saturday morning gets a slower play: Green City Market until 1, then a quarter mile north on Clark to the first weekend of Lincoln Park Zoo's Fall Fest, which is free to walk into. The radar covers the rest: wings at Gallagher Way, fifty-plus artists in Andersonville, and two restaurant openings we have been tracking for a month. Two places where we checked the work. Carlyle Club in River North is in this edition. We declined to print it three weeks in a row because every source said 'aiming for,' and it had already missed its own September 10 target. This week two outlets independently state a firm October 1 opening, which clears our bar. Neither states opening hours, so we have not printed any. The sunset times in this edition also come from the NOAA solar formula applied to Chicago's coordinates. The usual lookup site is blocked from where we work, so we calculated them: about 6:44 PM on Friday the 25th and about 6:32 PM on Friday, October 2. Treat each as accurate to a couple of minutes. What we cut, and why. The Chinese American Museum's Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday is real and still on, but it ran in last week's radar, and running it twice in eight days would be padding. A Chicago Gourmet lead for this weekend appeared only in a search summary with no source we could actually open, so it is not here. An African and Caribbean festival said to be happening this weekend in Washington Park had sources that contradicted each other on the venue, the edition number and the days. The Andersonville Fall Wine Walk is on its fourth week without a date we can confirm, and we have stopped chasing it. Next week is already interesting: the new Chicago Art Fair opens at the Merchandise Mart on October 7.

Friday, Oct 2, 5:00 PM: the Friday tour leaves once, at 5 West Town Art Walk guided walking tour, starting at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, West Town — The 16th annual West Town Art Walk runs Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4 across West Town's galleries and small businesses. On Friday, the free guided tour leaves at 5 PM from St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. That is the only Friday departure, so the day and the time both matter. Three listings agree on the dates and the tour times: do312, Secret Chicago and the Chicago Academy for the Arts. None of the three says how long the tour lasts, so plan to leave it by about 6:15 for the next step.
Friday, Oct 2, 6:00–8:00 PM: First Fridays, one Blue Line stop northwest First Fridays Art Walk, Wicker Park & Bucktown galleries — The hop: walk a few blocks from the church to the Division Blue Line stop and ride one stop to Damen. If you would rather walk, it is about a mile northwest up Milwaukee Avenue. First Fridays runs 6 to 8 PM on the first Friday of each month. The participating galleries include Jackson Junge Gallery, Tom Robinson Gallery, SoNa Contemporary Art, Torque Ltd. and Prism Spaces, and the chamber office hosts a student-art showcase. Leaving the tour at 6:15 plus the hop puts you there around 6:35, just after sunset (about 6:32 by our calculation). September's First Fridays ran in our Sept 3 radar; this is October's instance, here as the middle of the evening, not the headline. The organizer's page and the chamber calendar both carry the date and hours. It is free.
Friday, Oct 2, 8:00–9:30 PM: leave the last gallery by 7:40 The Lincoln Lodge Friday showcase, 2040 N Milwaukee Ave, Logan Square — The Lodge runs a stand-up and variety showcase every Friday and Saturday. Choose Chicago lists this Friday's show from 8:00 to 9:30 PM, and the Lodge's own site gives the same Friday-and-Saturday schedule. From the Damen stop it is under a mile up Milwaukee, about fifteen minutes on foot, so leave the galleries around 7:40. No ticket price appeared in either source, so check the calendar linked above before you go. We last sent readers here on August 7, and the eight-week gap has passed.

Why it lands: The first two steps are free, so you only pay once the evening is going well. Galleries give you something to talk about without much effort, and a gallery walk goes at whatever pace the two of you set. The fixed 8 PM show sets the end of the evening, so nobody has to decide when it is over. The weak spot is the tour length, which no source states. That is why we built in a 6:15 exit.

Weather backup: Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, the West Town Art Walk tour leaves at 1 PM from the south side of Eckhart Park, 1330 W Chicago Ave, and free pedicabs run 10 AM to 6 PM both days. That makes it a daytime version of the same plan with less walking. The Lincoln Lodge's own site says the showcase also plays Saturdays, but we did not confirm the October 3 show, so check the calendar first.

It also sits at the Addison Street end of Clark Street Live's closure that same weekend, the festival we sent you to last week. Friday, around 6:44 PM: sunset, with three hours of Friday left The beer tents and band stage, on the same grounds, until the 10 PM close — By our calculation, sunset on the 25th is about 6:44 PM. Arrive at 5 and you get close to two hours of daylight in the tents before dark. After that the bands play until the 10 PM close. You do not leave the grounds for any of this. We checked the Music Box Theatre, about a third of a mile away on Southport, as a next stop, but we did not pull its October calendar this cycle, so we are not sending you there. The Friday hours make this an easy early night.

Why it lands: Friday is the right night for this: it is the shortest of the three days, 5 to 10, and it starts right after the workday. There is nothing to book and no set time to make. The festival's own site answers the one open question, the gate price.

Weather backup: Saturday the 26th runs noon to 10 PM and Sunday the 27th noon to 7 PM on the same grounds. If you want a Friday night that is not a beer tent, Andersonville Arts Weekend opens the same evening with receptions along Clark Street (see the radar).

Saturday morning: the market on Clark, then pumpkins at the zoo

Saturday, Sept 26, 7:00 AM–1:00 PM: Wednesdays and Saturdays only Green City Market, 1817 N Clark St, Lincoln Park — The Lincoln Park market runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, 7 AM to 1 PM, through November 21, according to the market's own site. We saw no special programming listed for this Saturday. That is fine, because the market is the warm-up here. Arrive around 10 and you still have three hours before the stalls close.
Saturday, around 11:00 AM: a quarter mile north on Clark, on foot Lincoln Park Zoo Fall Fest, 2001 N Clark St — The hop is a walk up Clark from 1817 to 2001, roughly a quarter mile. This is Fall Fest's opening weekend. It runs Fridays through Sundays from September 25 to November 1, generally 10 AM to 5 PM, and general entry is free. It has pick-your-own pumpkins, professional pumpkin carvers, s'mores and live music. A 65-foot Ferris wheel, a giant slide and the inflatables are ticketed separately. The zoo's own page, WBEZ and the Lincoln Park Chamber all carry the run. The zoo describes the hours as 'generally' 10 to 5, so treat 5 PM as approximate.

Why it lands: A morning date with no booking is the low-risk version of a second or third date. If it is going well, you have the rest of Saturday, and if not, nobody has spent much. Both halves are free to enter, so the Ferris wheel is the only thing you have to decide to pay for.

Weather backup: Fall Fest also runs Friday and Sunday this weekend, and every Friday through Sunday until November 1. The market's other day is Wednesday, same hours.
