Labor Day weekend, and for once Chicago hands us the whole plan: the Chicago Jazz Festival is free in Millennium Park for four straight days (tonight through Sunday), and Navy Pier's last fireworks of 2026 go up at 10 PM on Saturday — the season ran May 23 to Sept 5, so that is genuinely the closer, not just another Saturday. Those two are four blocks and a river apart, which is why they are the Move of the Week. Two housekeeping notes before you plan anything. First: if you see Sundays on State on a listings site for this weekend, ignore it — the Loop Alliance cancelled the whole 2026 run back in February, and stale pages are still carrying old copy. Second, on our own end: the West Loop and Pilsen desk filed empty this week after eight searches, so there is nothing from that side of town below, and we would rather say so than pad the list. We also cut a River North restaurant opening pegged to Sept 10 — one hedged source saying the team is 'aiming for' that date is not a date, and we burned ourselves on this exact opening once already in August.

Free jazz in Millennium Park, then the last fireworks of the year

  1. Saturday, Sept 5 — afternoon into evening Chicago Jazz Festival, Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park — Free, no ticket, four days running Thu Sept 3 through Sun Sept 6 — the city's DCASE release, Choose Chicago and the festival's own site all carry the same date range, and Saturday is one of the four. Headliners across the weekend include Robert Glasper, Paquito D'Rivera, and Dee Dee Bridgewater with Bill Charlap. We are deliberately not printing set times: we did not see the 2026 stage grid ourselves, and the daily lineup is the first thing on the festival site. Check it Saturday morning and pick your set.
  2. 8:45–9:30 PM — the hop North on Michigan, down to the Chicago Riverwalk, and east — Millennium Park's Randolph Street edge to the river is four blocks straight up Michigan Avenue, then stairs down to the water. The Riverwalk runs roughly five blocks of continuous waterfront from Michigan east to Lake Shore Drive. Straight with you about dinner: the Riverwalk's food and drink is seasonal and we did not verify a single operator's hours this week, so we are not sending you to one by name. Either eat before you leave the park or treat whatever is open down there as a bonus.
  3. 10:00 PM sharp Navy Pier Summer Fireworks — season finale — Free, roughly ten minutes, music-synced, launched off the pier at 600 E Grand. The 2026 season ran May 23 to Sept 5 on a Wednesday-9 PM / Saturday-10 PM schedule, which makes this Saturday the last one until next May. From the Riverwalk's east end at Lake Shore Drive it is under a mile north along the lakefront — call it fifteen to twenty minutes, and leave the park with time to spare. On the clock: Chicago's sunset in the first week of September lands somewhere in the 7 o'clock hour. We could not confirm the exact minute for Sept 5 this week, so we are not printing one; what matters for your plan is that it will be fully dark long before the 10 PM launch.

Why it lands: Two free anchors, one walk between them, and a hard 10 PM endpoint that does the hardest part of a date for you — it tells you both when the night has a shape. The jazz festival is drop-in with no ticket, so being an hour late costs nothing; the fireworks are the one part with a real clock, and they do not run again this year.

Weather backup: Rained out or too much crowd: the same festival runs Thursday, Friday and Sunday in the same park, free, all four days confirmed. Indoors and pricier, Sound & Gravity is running the same nights across seven Avondale and Roscoe Village venues — $85 for a single day.

Renegade Craft on Division, then Big Star

Saturday, Sept 12, from 11:00 AM Renegade Craft Fair Chicago Fall, Division St between Damen and Ashland — 400-plus juried artists across four closed blocks, $5 suggested entry by QR code at the gate, rain or shine, Saturday and Sunday both. Worth knowing we had to resolve a date conflict on this one: a blog post still lists it as Sept 7–8, which looks like last year's copy. The official Renegade page and two other listings all say Sept 12–13, and that is what we are going with. The Blue Line's Division stop sits at the fair's Ashland end.
  2. Whenever you are done browsing — three blocks north Big Star, 1531 N Damen — Walk north on Damen from the fair's west end — about three blocks, same street, no transit. Its own site lists Friday and Saturday hours as 11 AM to midnight, which is the reason this play is written for Saturday: those are the two days we checked. We did not confirm Sunday hours, so if you go on the 13th instead, look them up before you count on the patio.

Why it lands: Neither half has a start time you can miss, and 400 vendors is an hour of easy conversation about nothing — you find out what someone actually likes by watching what they pick up. Thirteen hours of Saturday service at the other end means the plan does not collapse if the fair runs long.

Weather backup: Sunday the 13th is the identical fair, same blocks, same $5 — but confirm Big Star's Sunday hours first, or make the second stop somewhere you have already checked.

Film noir on Southport, seven nights running

Friday, Sept 4 — opening night NOIR CITY: Chicago at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N Southport — Nineteen films across seven nights, Sept 4 through Sept 10, hosted live: Eddie Muller introduces Sept 4–6, Alan K. Rode takes over Sept 7–10. We are not printing a curtain time. The Music Box's own series page carries each night's films and showtimes, we did not see the 2026 grid ourselves, and buying from the theatre directly is the whole point of linking it. The theatre sits at 3733 N Southport and the corridor's restaurant-and-bar stretch runs the blocks below it; the Brown Line's Southport stop is about three blocks south at 3411 N Southport, so this is a one-street plan from train to seat. We are not naming a table this week — our North Side desk verified the festival and the theatre, not anyone's dinner hours, and we do not print hours we have not seen.

Why it lands: Seven consecutive nights is unusual flexibility for a festival: if Friday dies, Monday through Thursday are the same series in the same room. A hosted introduction also hands you something to talk about afterward that is not the weather.

Weather backup: If noir is a hard sell, the Chicago Jazz Festival is free downtown through Sunday the 6th and needs no ticket at all.

African Festival of the Arts, then the lake at 55th

Saturday Sept 5, Sunday Sept 6 or Monday Sept 7, gates 10 AM–10 PM 36th African Festival of the Arts, Washington Park Sunken Garden, 55th and Cottage Grove — Three days across Labor Day weekend with a twelve-hour daily gate, corroborated by Choose Chicago's listing, the Times Weekly and the organizer's own site. We could not confirm this year's admission price from any of the three, so treat the gate as a question to answer on the organizer's site rather than a number we are promising you.
  2. Late afternoon — a bit over a mile due east Promontory Point at 55th Street and the lake — 55th Street runs straight east from the festival's Cottage Grove side to the lakefront — roughly a mile and change, so a short drive or a real walk, not a stroll. Limestone steps, free, open park, full downtown skyline across the water. It is the quiet half of the day after twelve hours of festival, and it costs nothing.

Why it lands: It is the only plan on this list that gets you south of the Loop, and the two halves are opposites on purpose: a large, loud, three-day festival and then an empty stretch of lakefront a mile away. The festival's twelve-hour gate means you can arrive at 4 PM and still have done it properly.

Weather backup: Monday the 7th is the same festival with the holiday crowd thinned out — same 10 AM to 10 PM gate.
