1. Friday, Sept 18, 5:00 PM — opening night, and the shortest of the three days Old Town Oktoberfest, Wells St between North Ave and Schiller St, Old Town — Wells Street closes between North Avenue and Schiller Street for the second year running — the inaugural edition was 2025, and the Old Town Merchants and Residents Association has been open about wanting this to become a fall tradition rather than a one-off. Friday is 5 to 10 PM: five hours, the short day. Bratwurst, pretzels and beer from the vendor rows, arts and crafts booths, and live German-inspired and Midwest bands on the stage. Six sources carry the identical three-day schedule — the merchants' association's own page linked above, Choose Chicago, ABC7, do312, Time Out Chicago and chicagoevents.com. What none of the six states is a gate price, so we are not printing one. The link above is where the entry terms live, and checking it takes thirty seconds.
2. Around 6:30 PM — the Masskrugstemmen, on the same closed street Stein-holding contests and the arts and crafts vendor rows — Masskrugstemmen is the stein-holding contest: arm straight, full liter, last one standing. Every one of the six sources mentions it, which is also the honest problem — not one of them prints a contest time. So treat 6:30 as our suggestion, not a fact, and treat the day's stage grid on oldtownchicago.org as the actual schedule. Between contests the same closed stretch carries the craft vendors. You are not leaving the closure for any of this: the walk from the North Avenue end to the Schiller Street end is the entire itinerary, which is the argument for a street festival on a first or fifth date alike.
3. Sunset, 6:54 PM — then the bands until the 10 PM hard close Live music on Wells Street to the Friday close — Straight with you about the clock, because we promised to be: sunset on Friday the 18th is 6:54 PM. The lights come up on Wells with three hours still on the Friday clock. Friday ends hard at 10 PM. If Friday is spoken for, Saturday runs 11 AM to 10 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 8 PM on the same closure — eleven hours and nine hours respectively, instead of five. One thing we are deliberately not doing: sending you on to Second City, Kayao or Jeni's afterward. We built an entire Wells Street play around those three rooms on August 3, and repeating them seven weeks later is filler, not service.

Why it lands: A street closure is the rare plan with no reservation to lose and no curtain to make — you arrive when you arrive and it still works. Friday's five hours are the version where you both still have the whole weekend in front of you, and the stein contest is something you can enter together rather than stand and watch. The one soft spot is the unstated gate price, which is why that check is step one and not an afterthought.

Weather backup: Saturday the 19th runs 11 AM to 10 PM and Sunday the 20th 11 AM to 8 PM on the same closed stretch of Wells — the daylight hours are when the arts and crafts vendors are worth the walk. If the weather turns, Chicago Exhibition Week's closing weekend has 70-plus galleries open through Sunday the 20th, many of them in River North, with a passport-stamp program that earns free admission to the Art Institute, the Driehaus Museum and the MCA.
